Chen Chen & Kai Williams
Chen & Kai is a New York–based design studio founded in 2011 by Chen Chen and Kai Williams. Both designers graduated from Pratt Institute and established the studio as a platform for experimental work across furniture, objects, and materials. Their practice explores unconventional processes and material transformations, often combining industrial techniques with hand-crafted methods. The studio is known for projects such as the Stone Fruit series, which uses real fruit molds to produce cast objects, and a range of resin and mixed-material furniture that emphasizes color, transparency, and form. Chen previously worked at the New York design store Moss, while Williams worked in Tom Sachs’ studio, experiences that inform their approach to both conceptual and functional design. Their work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York and the Venice Architecture Biennale.
